1. THE IGNITION FUNCTION
Ignition leads are an essential part in ensuring the delivery of
maximum spark energy to the engine. The actual condition of the
ignition leads plays a very important role in the transmission of
this high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plug.
2. THE SUPPRESSION FUNCTION
The ignition lead must suppress electromagnetic radiation that is
generated, by the high voltages as it is transmitted along the
cable. Suppression of this radiation, that interferers with
radio, television, mobile communications, is mandatory by
law.
|
The ignition leads are subjected to the harsh under-engine hood
environment of extreme changes in temperature, moisture,
aggressive chemical contaminants of fuel, lubricants and dirt,
vibrations, voltage surges, etc. All these actions speed up the
degeneration of the ignition leads performance capabilities.
 |
AS
TIME GOES BY
Under these aggressive conditions, the ignition leads can crack,
boots become porous, and terminal become oxidised. This results
in poor voltage transmission and incomplete combustion.
WHAT YOU NOTICE
Increased fuel consumption, difficult starting, soft black sooty
deposits (carbon build-up) on the spark plug's electrodes,
sluggish engine performance, and disruption to radio
reception.
WHAT YOU CAN NOT SEE
At the onset, damage to the ignition lead, cannot usually be
seen. Microscopic cracks result in lost energy.
|
|
|
- Your car is difficult to start, especially so
in cold and
damp weather. As you keep attempting to start the engine, the
battery runs down.
- Abnormal amounts of carbon dioxide, sooty
exhaust gases are
seen at the exhaust tail pipe.
- You can feel flat spots in the car's
acceleration.
The chances are that your ignition leads are in a
poor
condition and need replacement.
To avoid these problems most vehicle manufacturers recommend,
that as part of the cars preventative maintenance care, the
ignition leads should be replaced at the same time the spark
plugs are, or every three (3) years - depending on what comes
first. It is better that this be done before the winter months
commence.
Electricfil are the inventors and original patent holders of the
spirally wound conducting wire around a ferrimagnetic core that
is capable of conducting high voltage current without energy
loss, with minium electromagnetic interference.
The unique spirally wound wire enables absorption of
electromagnetic radiation all along the cable thus eliminating
any radio, mobile communication, television, and any other
electronic car equipment inference.
Electricfil's BOUGICORD ® is the result of applied
laboratory research and extensive field-testing, which represents
the state-of-the-art in technology and development.
Every stage in the course of production, the cable, terminals,
and boots is, constantly measured, and monitored for quality
compliance.
- The cable: the selected materials exceed the
requirements
imposed by all the worlds leading car manufactures. The
insulation of the cable prevents dielectric leakage, and misfire,
the cables silicone sheathing protects it from the engines bays
aggressive environment.
- The terminals: the shape and crimping features
provide
positive, dual locking to the spark plugs, coil, and distributor.
The stainless steel staple in contact with the spirally would
wire and terminal guarantees electrical continuity. All this
insures long life performance, excellent corrosion resistance,
and positive connection.
- The boots: premium grade spark plug and coil
boots provide
superior connection protection against dielectric leakage,
moisture, and chemical contamination.

Copper core cable by Bougicord, is included in our product range solely
to cater for these cars were it was original equipment manufacturer
(OEM) specified and still may remain the preferred option by some motor
mechanics and car owners.
Copper core ignition lead technology is the oldest form of ignition
wire and until recent times was commonly used by most German based car
manufactures. In addition, copper core ignition cable can be found on
some carburettor engined rally or racing cars that do not have
electronic engine management systems.
Copper
core (solid metal) type ignition cable has virtually no electrical
resistance. Hence, on OEM passenger cars, in particular those fitted
with electronic engine management systems, electronic ignition, etc,
the ignition leads connectors (spark plug/coil/distributor) are fitted
with internal resistors at both ends of the wire. The value of this
resistance varies slightly between OEM car manufacturers, but usually
is around 5,000 Ohms.
These resistors acts like a barrier to prevent any electromagnetic
interference (EMI)/radio-frequency interference (RFI) noise emissions
generated than is generated at the spark plugs. However, this
interference can still be reflected into the surrounding engine bay
space and affect the vehicles electronics. To avoid this, metal shields
are added to the spark plug boots. All copper core cable lead sets by
Bougicord have these resistors fitted and in most instances, shields if
OEM specified.
This approach is almost the equivalent of using Bougicord wire wound
technology for noise interference suppression. However, the spark
energy for copper core that is available at the spark plug is much
lower than for Bougicord spiral wire wound core.
This makes Bougicord spiral cable lead sets, a better choice for LPG
vehicles, and those motor mechanics and vehicle owners wanting to
upgrade for improved fuel economy with reduced vehicle emissions.

Brochure
The ignition coil has been around for a long time. The ignition coil in
a primitive form invented by Nicholas Callan in 1836, and Heinrich
Daniel Ruhmkorff improved the design and patented the coil in 1851.
Ruhmkorff device formed the basis of the ignition coil as used in
today’s automotive applications, firstly in the United States
and then globally. The ignition coil is still similar to their first
application, but due to the demands for increased performance together
with the need to reduce size, weight, emissions and cost, it
has under gone radically improvements in both technology and materials
- with Bougicord innovations and patents leading the way.
Bougicord is developing a new approach to ignition: smart coils. These
devices can integrate sensing capabilities and adapt the shape of the
electrical spark to engine conditions. In addition, Bougicord have
developed coils with high-energy densities that are well suited to new
“flex-fuel” type engines.
The basic function of any ignition coil is to transform the
battery’s low voltage into high intensity voltage necessary
to produce the spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in each
combustion chamber. The major advantages of Bougicord innovative coils
are:
- Excellent performance in severe under-hood
environment
- Designed for all lean fuel mixtures &
biofuels
- High efficiency voltage boost & transfer
- Minimization of weight and space due their
compact form
- Ease of installation
This coil type is a unique
Bougicord innovation and competitive solution. The ignition lead set
and ignition coil functions are combined in one compact unit. This
innovation insures electrical connection integrity, with optimised
power & voltages curves and is suitable for all engines
configurations. In addition, to the technical and economic advantages
it provides the best solution when the coil is located in a hostile
environment that lacks space and accessibility.
Developed and
patented by Bougicord, it is suitable for all engines working with mono
or twin static ignition strategy. It can be inserted in the space
between the two camshafts for 16 valves engines or fixed vertically for
8 valves engines. All high voltage connections are carried out in one
single operation during assembly. It makes reliable high voltage
connections and its assembly is made in only one operation for all
cylinders (pending on engine congifuartion, in-line, or vee).
As static tension transistor,
the DIS is part of the ignition circuit. DIS-solid-state electronic
ignition coils are used on vehicles with distributor-less ignition
systems and eliminated the need great amount of maintenance in point
adjustment and replacement. They are contained in a single moulded
block with multiple high-tension terminals and used in conjunction with
ignition leads to bring the high voltage to the spark plugs.
This DIS technique uses one
coil per spark plug. The coil – active section is located on
top of the coil tube section (hence referred as Top Plug Coil or
mushroom coil).
This DIS coil technique also
uses one coil per spark plug. This coil type fits engines that have
narrow spark plug wells of 18 to 24 mm diameter. Compared to the Top
Plug Coil, the active coil, and electronics are situated inside the
tube.
This coil pack design combines
the advantages of the pencil/ top plug coil with the advantages of
integrated ignition coil unit.
As with ignition leads, ignition coils belong to that often-overlooked
group of parts that serve a critical purpose. Ignition coil do not
generate horsepower, but inferior and defective coils can hurt
performance, fuel economy and contribute to increased emissions. A
defected ignition coil can result in damage to the engine management
system and increase operating costs.
First symptoms of possible ignition coil failure are:
- increased fuel consumption and increased carbon
dioxide emissions
- starting your car is difficult in cold and/or
humid weather, the battery runs down
- you detect flat spots in the car’s
acceleration and notice power loss\
The consequences are:
- the car fails to start
- the spark plugs, the battery functions are
impaired
- the electronic control unit and on-board
electronics could be at risk of permanent damage
The professional motor mechanics finds a good time to check the
ignition system (leads & coils) is when the spark plugs are
being serviced and/or replaced.
If its ignition coils you need, its Bougicord.
